“It Is What It Is”… Is An Excuse.

the dead body of a human being or animal preserved by the ancient Egyptian process or some similar method of embalming.

There is a phrase that we hear all too often,”It is what it is.”  What exactly does that mean?  In truth it’s an excuse.  It’s an excuse to do nothing, to not try.  “Things are the way things are and that’s how they’re always going to be,” is usually the follow-up to that statement.

It is one of the most self-defeating statements a person can make to themselves because it basically says that there’s nothing that I can do to change this problem.  It’s strange to me because it seems as though the worse things get, the more likely someone is to say this phrase.  They never say this when things are going good for them.   That’s why I believe that if something can change for the worse then in that same vein it can also change for the better.

The problem is that we accept bad changes to our circumstances readily, but, the good things we tend to fight.  If someone tells us something bad is going to happen, Ex: “You’ll need to be on a certain medication for the rest of your life,” most of us will be upset, but, we won’t have too much of a problem accepting it.  However, let someone say to you “The medication you’ve been taking all your life, you’ll never need to take again.”  That instantly falls into the category of it sounds too good to be true.

So I guess the opposite of too good to be true is it’s too bad to be false.  Accepting negativity is probably one of the hardest things to overcome in life.  We have to deal with it every day as we’re spoon fed it 24/7 from everything and just about everyone around us.  Try telling someone you’re going to make the world a better place and they’ll laugh at you and ask how you’re going to do that all by yourself.

However, if you tell them you’re going to turn this place into a living hell, they’ll have no doubt in their mind that you can do it.  They’ll even try to stop you, because they know you can do it.  I like to think that things can always get better, but, it can be really hard when people around you always expect them to get worse.

This is for anyone out there who’s fighting against the negativity, against the doubts and against the odds and statistics.  Anyone who’s out there trying to see past today and make tomorrow into a better place than yesterday.  To anyone who is simply trying to make things better…

…allow me to be one of the people who told you…

…you can.
